Hello and welcome to the JBF informal schools website.
The aim of this charity is to provide free schooling for some of the poorest children of Delhi, many of whom are street children, or are working children who collect waste materials for recycling.
We are currently operating the school in the Kotla region of Delhi, working closely with the local community committee who have helped to provide the location for the JBF Informal School Project.
At present we are only able to provide 44 places for the local children, although there are many more who have applied. The school operates five days a week and operates 2 classes of 22 pupils. The lessons are made up of a mixture of academic matters such as learning numbers and letters, cultural subjects and social matters. Of course the highlight of the day is always the daily meal, which proves to be most popular and is greeted with a considerable applause. For many of the children this will perhaps be the only regular meal they will receive.
Most of the children that attend the school are ages up to 7 or 8 and have never had any formal education, many have never used a writing implement or learnt to read. So the lessons that are provided aim to teach the children the basics, which will then give them the opportunity to improve their chances at a better life.
We are looking for more sponsors of child places, it currently costs just £13.50 per child place, per month. These costs are kept low as JBF charges no administration fees, and all UK staff are volunteers. Please visit the Donations page for more information.
