An update on the progress being made at the JBF School.

I sat down to write this update, with the help of a description of the school sent as an e-mail from Dr.Sashanka, Trustee and Administrator of JBF in Delhi. But I think I will just let Sashanka tell you in his own words and then I will add a bit on the end:

“On April 10 2005, we held the first class in a community hall at Viklang Basti (unplanned settlement within Delhi). We started on Sundays and for whole April month the school was running there and only on Sundays. Then with the help of the local people we made a semi permanent arrangement in one end of the Basti and shifted the school there from May’05.

The school runs in two shifts one starts at 8.30hrs and till 12.30hrs in the morning and the second starts at 13.30hrs and till 17.30hrs. Mr. Rajesh who remains in both the classes looks at overall school activities ranging from calling the children from their houses, arranging the class, controlling the children during school hour, managing the meal etc. Mrs. Sandhya teaches the children who attends in the 1st shift. Mrs. Abha teaches the children who attends in the 2nd shift.

The lessons are made up of a mixture of academic matters such as learning the numbers and letters, cultural subjects such as story telling, songs and dance, and social matters such as discussions on how the children might avoid becoming involved with such things as crime, drugs etc. Moreover, the lessons focused on their health hygiene and overall physical & mental development is also taken care.

After finishing the regular class in both the shifts, meals are provided to the children just before leaving the school”.

Thank you Sashanka, the only thing I would like to add is that during the time the school has been running, we have had an average of 44 children per day coming to the class (average 22 children per class x2 classes per day).  I think we can all be proud that we have managed to turn our plan into a reality - there is obviously great interest amongst the children for learning and it is great that we have the opportunity to improve their chances of a better life.

Thank you again to everyone that has helped us by sponsoring or by donation, and for those that have not yet done so, there are still child places looking for sponsorship – don’t be shy!
