JBF Informal School Project Update: 1st July 07:

The aim of the project is to provide informal education along with a proper meal. This was the initial aim with which JBF started the school, later with many additions. Due to heat in the last few months less nos. of children attending the school however nearly 20 nos. of children had joined formal schools run by Municipality or Government and a few to private run schools. Thus in spite of a bit decrease in no. of children in JBF Informal School, it is a matter of proud for JBF as it has succeeded in motivating children. We are very sure from the month of July; there will be again more children as there will be some new entry & some comforting will be back to the pavilion.

At school the lessons are the combination of academic as well as extra curricular activities imparted with the knowledge of numbers and letters, cultural subjects such as story telling, songs and dance, social maters such as discussions on how children can avoid involving with crime, drugs addiction etc. Moreover, lessons focus on their health, hygiene and overall physical and mental development, love and compassion for animal and bond between animal & human. Besides this JBF is running some vocational training courses for the females who do not go to school.
They are trained in paintings, stitching, making hand fans, paper products etc.

Besides imparting education we have organized Free Hepatitis – B Vaccination camp for the children of the school. Two boostering doses of this vaccine were also provided to enhance up the immunity. Regular Dental & Eye testing also done for these children.

To encourage parents mainly the mothers and relatives & neighbours of the children who are/were students of JBF Informal School, we have started a Women Literacy Project. The classes are held according to the convenience of the women so that they don’t start considering the classes as imposition. To encourage the participation of the women, they are provided with a fruit also. JBF also organizes health check-up camp for all including young & old. In one of the special camp, one lady doctor examined around 44 females and prescribed medicines. JBF purchased the medicines from the store and distributed among them.

Different occasions like Christmas, New Year Day, Edd, Saraswati Puja, Republic Day etc had been celebrated in the schools with great enthusiasm. Educational tours like visit to parliament museums were also organized for the children.
On 4th April’07, few Joggies (slum houses) at Kotla Mubarakpur caught fire and burnt in to ashes, from where some children come to our Prem Nagar Unit informal school. JBF provided meal to the affected people and distributed cloths collected from well-wishers.

On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour on 12th June’07, a special interactive session was organized at Viklang Basti unit of School. Children were told about the terrible affects of the child labours and also told about their right to education and enjoyment. They were also asked to be bold & brave to fight against duping them for small amount of money and exploiting them for different trades.
