UPDATE - SUMMER 2008 Page 2
Nutrition for children.
Children suffer from nutritional deficiency diseases due to improper nutrition at their home which affects physical and mental health adversely. JBF Informal School provides a daily meal as well as milk and fruits. Sadly, the school meal is the firstmeal of the day for many numbers of these children.
The school also provides Fruits/Snacks to the older children attending the school in the afternoon session. The school maintains plates and other utensils required to serve the meal regularly. The children used to carry their own plates to school, but the sizes varied a lot and this resulted in arguments amongst the children.
Thus the nutritious food is also an attractive point for children to come to the Informal School.
Tailoring for under privileged women:
Viklang Basti unit of JBF Informal School provide vocational training on tailoring. The women (mostly house wives) can come any time within 9.00am to 1.00pm to the school to learn or to work on the tailoring machine. The well trained instructor provides necessary assistance to the women who come to learn. As the timing is flexible the more number of women can join to learn tailoring out of their household works.
Most of these women are either part time maid or small time wage earner or has to look after their children back at home while their husband remain out for wage earning. There seemed to be a need give them additional education from where they can earn also. It was decided to give them tailoring classes which may help them earn or at least save some of their money by doing the tailoring of clothes for their own family.
Educational trips for children.
On 16th Nov’07, children from JBF Informal School were taken to the Teen Murti Bhavan (residence of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru) as part of their educational visit.
The authorities then requested for a performance next day and on 17th a troop from the JBF school led by Dr. Smriti (Trustee) & Miss Sandhya (Teacher) performed there. This was a great opportunity for the children from poor slum and they were all in high spirits.
The children of the school are taken out for exposure trips to different places. These trips help broaden their knowledge base by showing them places of national and cultural importance. This helps them understand how India has formed and how it is being run today.
Trips to the following places were undertaken during the year 2007 –08
- Kutub Minar.
- India Gate
- Red fort
- Lotus temple
