UPDATE - SUMMER 2008 Page 4

Strengthening of social bonding.

In Indian culture, social bonding is kept alive through the celebration of festivals.  The people of Viklang Basti are mainly either Hindu or Muslim.

JBF Informal School celebrates Hindu, Muslim and Christian religious festivals in a common platform to promote brotherhood and social integrity amongst the children. JBF has no religious affiliation and the Christian festivals are celebrated at the children’s request after being told about Christian events that are celebrated in UK (like Christmas).

Holi, Dusahera, Pungal, Eid, Christmas, Diwali, Rakshabandhan, Saraswati Puja   etc are celebrated commonly in the school and this seems to be enjoyed equally by all.

Celebration of common birthday:

The actual birth date of most of the children remains unknown.  However, the parents know which season their children were born, so a common Birthday Party is held every 2 months for all the children born within that period.

 Annual Day Function:

The Annual Day function of JBF Informal School was organised on 11th August 2007 where a cultural program was organised. The children & women from the JBF Informal Schools performed on this occasion, to great applause from the audience.

Along with this, there was a felicitation ceremony where Mr. Jonny Krause, Trustee of JBF(Scotland) was congratulated on completing his motorcycle ride from Scotland to India. Mr. Jonny has covered more than 6,500miles from Scotland to Delhi after crossing 16 countries with his 25years old Yamaha XS 850. This ride was to promote JBF’s projects and to create awareness of our work. JBF team salute him for his enthusiasm, courage & dedication.

Celebrations of National & International important days:

Independence Day, republic Day, Children’s Day, Teachers Day, International Literacy Day, World Veterinary Day etc are also celebrated with the children of the school.

Annual Sports Day:

The annual sports day was a great success with everyone having a lot of fun.  Many different games are played, giving every child the opportunity to take part.

Workshops / Seminars / Special Talks.

Workshop on Tie and Dye in cloths, Dia (Lamp) making, Cooking and Clay modelling was also organized during the year where a number of children and adults participated.  A talk on self reliance & another on the occasion of International Literacy Day was also organized during the year.

It is with great satisfaction that we look back on the past 12 months.  Thanks to all our supporters who have made this possible and we look forward to the coming year with anticipation and hope.
